The Invisible Student Population
August 2021
We were commissioned by the Feather River College to interview a group of student parents. The result is this five part docu-series that will simultaneously warm and break your heart. These are true stories of struggle, triumph, love, dedication, hope and hard work in pursuit of our best selves against all odds.ย
According to a 2019 report released by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) in conjunction with the Institute for Womenโs Policy Research (IWPR)
๐ย There are 20 million college students in the U.S. and 4.3 million of those students are raising a child.
๐ย Most of these student parents are in their 30โs, nearly half of those student parents are working full time jobs.
๐ย While student parents get better grades than independent students, only have of all student parents finish their degree.
๐ย College graduates see 57 percent more job opportunities than non-graduates, and it is estimated that, by 2020, two-thirds of all jobs will require postsecondary education. A degree enables you to qualify for these additional opportunities and offers you more flexibility in where one chooses to work.
i3 Innovation
August 2021
What happens when we invite those typically excluded from innovation circles and provide them with the resources and mentors to address challenges they experience in their everyday lives?
In this docu-series, you will meet a group of students and faculty at Sierra College changing the way we think of innovation and invention education. They are sure to challenge your beliefs of what’s possible when we focus on inclusion as part of the three I’s: Innovation, Invention, Inclusion.
Sierra College was one of four California Community Colleges selected to develop a pilot program shaping the future of invention education at community colleges with funding from the Lemelson-MIT Foundation.
